The Dependable Standby: The LBD for All Weddings

Chort Face and I went to a wedding a few years ago with friends of ours and I remember really liking our friend’s dress. It was a black fit-and-flare style with a halter-neck.  I complimented her on the dress and she said, “Thanks! I wore it to your wedding, too!”

She mentioned that she always wore that dress to weddings. I really like the idea of having one formal/special occasion dress that can be worn for all weddings. It would definitely make the decision easier when figuring out what to wear.

Black Dress at a Wedding

Trixxi Dress (bought from Macy’s, 2009,  last seen here) / BaubleBar Sky Cushion Cut Studs (2011) / Banana Republic Ice Queen Necklace (2013) / Gold Sunburst Necklace (bought at a garage sale, 2013) / Mossimo Silver Strappy Heels from Target (bought in 2007, not shown, last seen here)

I wore the above dress to a wedding this past September. I don’t always wear this dress to weddings, but if I had to pick one dress to wear to all weddings, this one would be it. I like the deep V and Grecian pleating and the fit and flare silhouette. I had it tailored a little too tight after I had gotten it, so I have to be careful in terms of the amount of eating I do in it.

I’ve worn the dress to a total of three weddings so far.

The V-neckline is a bit dramatic, so I took a tip from Cee of To Brighten My Day from a while back and layered some necklaces to make it a little more covered.

I mixed silver (the crystal necklace) and gold metals and I wore sky blue studs also with silver and gold metal accents to match the Chort Face’s tie as he was a groomsman.

At one point during the reception, I quickly walked to the hotel room to change to another dress because I had eaten too much and I was bursting out of the seams. I changed into a less formal dress (this one) that had a similar neckline and into flats and no one even knew that I had changed.

By the end of the night, I looked like this. Yes, by that point, hair was no longer a concern.

eShakti Review: Anastasia Dress

eShakti provides custom-made items for sizes 0-36W. Customization can be made on sleeve length and type and hem length. Their customization feature has led me to some great custom-made dresses. My previous reviews here and here.

The Anastasia Dress from eShakti has intricate detailing around its neckline with a flattering boat-neck and a fit and flare silhouette.

When I first received the dress, I was impressed that the dress came wrinkle-free. This communicated to me that eShakti seriously takes feedback from its reviewers and makes changes where it can, as the first time I reviewed a dress for eShakti, the dress had arrived with wrinkles. Upon reading my review, the Head of Marketing had told me that they would take my thoughts under consideration and make changes…and I can see they did!

The dress fit right out of the box as I used the customization feature available through eShakti. This feature is an additional $7.50 and requires providing measurements including waist, hips, over bust, bust, and under bust. eShakti kindly included measuring tape in my dress package as well.

Note that many of the dresses from eShakti are made with a cotton poplin material and after wearing that type of material for awhile, wrinkles will undoubtedly appear. This time around, though, I did not have any wrinkles even after wearing the dress for a prolonged amount of time, and I received many compliments with nary a comment on wrinkles. Instead, friends said they really liked the design of the neckline, and like me, appreciated that the dress comes with pockets.

Although cotton is a more casual type of material, I immediately envisioned wearing this frock to a wedding or formal dinner setting, so I dressed it up with mauve satin heels, a grey clutch, and some sparkly earrings.

Brides looking for customization for their bridesmaids and for different dress styles in the same color or for different colors in the same style might like to check out eShakti’s wedding and events collection:

As a more casual winter to spring transition outfit, I wore the Anastasia Dress with a green cardigan, gold belt, and blush-colored flats.

Black & Brown

Very simple outfit below, but I loved it nonetheless. This LBD is one of my favorites: it’s comfortable, flattering, easy to wear, and can be dressed up or down.

Outfit: Gap Outlet LBD (2006), Talbots Wedges (2011)
Accessories: Belt (Masque Boutique, 2009), Jade Shoulderduster Earrings, Assorted Bracelets (tan stud wrap bracelet was complimentary from BaubleBar for signing up; BaubleBar’s now offering $10 off when you sign up for an account)

Vibe: Relaxed, but put together

I wore this outfit when I went to get a haircut and to visit a friend’s baby. Her baby’s adorable, but while my other friends held the one-week old baby, I refused.

I have a huge fear of dropping babies, so I’d rather not have any potential liability issues. Also, I am known for having some pretty questionable child-raising techniques.

In any event, I was lucky. The baby peed on the mother and tooted three times while being held by another friend.

I, on the other hand, was able to admire and coo from afar.
